Târgu Mureş ( Marosvásárhely in hungarian, Neumarkt in german), is the seat and the largest city of Mures county, Transylvania, Romania.

The city of Targu Mures has a lot to offer for tourists. There are many sites to visit to better know the history of these places and the population that lives in this area.

Here you can visit the Medieval Fortress, The Cultural Palace, Teleki Library, The Administration Palace, one of the largest orthodox cathedrals in the country and last but not least – the fascinating architecture of the buildings in downtown.

The Best Of Targu Mures

Tourist Attractions:

The Medieval Fortress

In order to consolidate his power on Mures territory, Stefan Bathori orders the fortification of the monastic ans-amble in town, which was finished in 1492. The old fort included the present territory from the south-west of the fortress, called “The Little Castle”.

The Old City Hall

To build this monument, the architects found inspiration in the other city halls that existed during the Renaissance, like Sienna’s town hall. Hence the clock tower on the north side, that stands 60 m tall, and can be seen from very far away. Above the entrance of the building, there is a balcony from where the mare would address the people.

Targu-Mures City Hall

Is the most representative public building from between the wars period of time, when during the establishment of capitalism in Romania, starting in 1922, many industrial units and buildings of common interest are erected.

The Cultural Palace

The Cultural Palace is a remarkable construction in the city center. It was built upon initiative of the mayor of the town, György Bernády. Building works started in the spring of 1911. The most impressive composition is the mosaic on the main facade, an allegorical scene inspired by the Hungarian folklore.

The National Theater

The building of a theater was a must since it functioned in the Cultural Palace building with the State Philharmonic, both using the same big hall of the Cultural Palace building.

Was built between 1925-1934 as a stringent necessity in the spiritual life of the romanians and is a representative monument of the Romanian Orthodox spirituality. It not only dominates the local architectural landscape but it is considered, in terms of inner space, the largest building of its kind in the country.terms

Sighisoara, also called the medieval town, is the place where time seems to have stood still, its inhabitants still observing the old traditions even today. Sighişoara is one of the very few medieval towns in south-east of Europe that is still inhabited and the only one of this kind in Romania. It dates back to the 17th century.

A great part of its reputation is due to the most famous celebrity in history – in our times – of all the celebrities that have had something to do with Sighisoara, Vlad Tepes the ruler, also called Dracula, son of one of Romania’s ruler – Vlad Dracu.

From the year 1999, the center of the medieval town of Sighisoara has been listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Each year, a Medieval Festivaltakes place in the old citadel at the end of July. There is a copy of the “Statue of the Wolf” (“Lupa Capitolina”), a symbol of the latin origin of the romanian people.

Sibiu and its surroundings are some of the most visited places in Romania. The historical center is one of the most well preserved historical sites in the country. Many of the walls and fortification systems are very well kept. There are museums in Sibiu that host art collections, paintings, decorative art, anthropology, history, archeology, science history and natural science.

The city is located near Fagaras Mountains – an important trekking destination – Paltinis resort – a winter sports destination – and the mountain resort Balea-Lac (Balea Lake), a very well known national travel destination.
Sovata ( Szováta in hungarian, Sowata in german) is a town in Mureş county, Transilvania, România. Bezid lake, which has covered an entire village except for the tower of the church, is a touristy attraction as well.

Sovata is a resort that functions all year round and was first mentioned as a healing place in a document dating back to 1597 and becomes a therapeutic resort in 1850. Sovata’s reputation is due to lake Ursu (46.000 m2), Aluniş (9.000 m2), Verde (5.000m2), Negru, Roşu, Mierlei and Şerpilor, with waters containing chloride and sodium that have led to the heliothermic phenomenon.

The resort is recommended for the successful treatment of gynecologic diseases but also for degenerative and inflammatory conditions, rheumatism, post traumatic conditions, nervous system and heart diseases.

- Salted Baths - In Praid there is also a swimming pool with salt water. Next to it are the hot salty baths (in tubs) that are very efficient in treating rheumatism.

- Treatment- consists in inhaling the mine air which is very beneficial for respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis and allergies).

The medieval fortress of Rapsonné (a historic monument), 12 km from Praid:

Many tourists choose to take the trip to this fortress, going est from Praid, going up from the valley of Tarnava Mica untill reaching km 5. There is a path through the forest and meadows that leads to a rock formation called Piatra Rab. The front peak, where Rapsonne fortress once stood, is worth the climb from the south-west for a unique experience.

The city is favored by its right geographical position: surrounded the mountains, near the natural dam Lacul Rosu (25 km) and 60 km to Praid salt mine resort. You can also ski at the Izvoru Mures resort (20 km away) or you can visit Borsec resort town (approximately 50 km away).

Lacul Rosu is a natural dam lake formed in 1837 and located near the foot of Hasmasul Mare, near Gheorgheni of Harghita county. It is the largest natural mountain lake in Romania. It was formed after the collapse of a flank from Mount Ghilcoş. Its name comes from Pârâul Roşu (Red Creek) which crosses layers of red iron oxides and hydroxides.

Cheile Bicazului is a very picturesque geographical area of Romania located in the central part of Hasmas Mountains, in north-east, in Harghita and Neamt counties. They were formed by Bicaz river and link Transylvania and Moldova.
